VOL.7 RESPECTED AND INFLUENTIAL ARTISTS――WE FIND OUT ABOUT BTS’ MUSICAL INFLUENCES!

CREATIVE AND EXCELLENT HIP HOP SOUND WITH EACH MEMBER’S VOICE AND FAST RAP FLOWING WITH A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT COLOUR. THIS TIME, AS ARTISTS THEMSELVES, THE COLOURFULLY CHARMING BTS WILL EACH TELL US ABOUT THEIR MUSICAL BACKGROUND OF THE ARTISTS THEY WERE INFLUENCED BY AND WHO THEY AIMED TO BE LIKE.

The artist whom they set their sights on becoming like, 3 out of 7 chose BIGBANG……

――When did you set your sights on becoming an artist? What lit the spark in you?

J-HOPE: I first started gaining interest in dance by watching various dance videos, and in them I saw BIGBANG. I too wanted to dance with such high quality and be an artist like my sunbaes so in my first year of middle school I auditioned.

V: When I was 10 years old, I saw singers perform on TV and they looked like they were having such a fun time singing. I wanted to sing while running around on a huge stage too. I thought that performing with all your heart looked like a lot of fun. Above all, I was captivated by BIGBANG sunbaes’ performances.

JUNG KOOK: When I was in elementary school, I saw G-DRAGON sunbae and I wanted to be a singer. Then, since being a trainee, I wanted to be an artist rather than a singer.

――3 of you were inspired by BIGBANG!

J-HOPE: BIGBANG is a truly amazing group so we were really influenced by them.

JIN: From when I was in elementary school, I had a vague dream to become a performer, so when I was in 3rd year of senior high school, I watched dramas. The actors looked really cool and seeing this I was deeply moved. I wanted to try too so in order to challenge myself, in university, I listened to the British artist Daley’s music. I wanted to sing like him and move people, is what I came to think.

JIMIN: When I was in junior high school I started to learn dance. I also performed by myself in public, and went to see other singers’ performances. “If I were to perform on that stage, I wonder what kind of feeling I would have~” is what I overwhelmingly felt. Among other things, my entire family was a fan of RAIN sunbae, and so watching his performances, I decided I wanted to become a singer as well.

SUGA: When I was in elementary school 5th grade, I loved the the underground Korean reggae group STONY SKUNK from YG, and I went to see their performances. I decided that I wanted to try making my own music in 6th grade after watching Epik High perform. From that moment on I was prepared.

RAP MONSTER: In my first year of junior high, my friend made me listen to rap, and at that time it was the first time such a song existed in this world so I was shocked. Then I tried writing my own rap lyrics. I want to show my world, is what I came to think. Continue reading “[Interview/Trans] BTS ☆ Style Vol. 7 at Oricon Style [140702]”

BTS☆STYLE VOL.16: A WARNING TO YOUR LOVER……A NEW SONG ABOUT THE FEELINGS OF A MAN FRUSTRATED WITH LOVE

BTS’ previous work “BOY IN LUV” reached 4th in the Weekly Single Ranking! Now, with even more vigor, the South Korean boys group Bangtan Sonyeondan is releasing their long-awaited 3rd Japanese single “Danger-Japanese Ver.-” With how much their previous release gained popularity, this time it’s a comeback! We were told about their latest work “Danger-Japanese Ver.-” and we’re drawn to BTS’ appeal even more!

▮The highlight of the new song’s performance is the “high blood pressure dance”

――BTS’ 3rd Japanese single “Danger-Japanese Ver.-” really gives the impression of a dangerous man, with an intense hip hop number unique to BTS.
JIN :  In Korean, you say “a man among men” as “Sangnamja” but in “Danger-Japanese Ver.-”, the meaning of “Sangnamja” differs a bit. “Even though I really love you, why don’t you love me back?” It’s a song showing the resentment of a man facing a bad relationship.
V : A warning to your lover!

――This work is not directed towards adults, but rather a warning towards your lover?
V : Yes, that’s right!

――“Danger” was released in August as a part of your first full album “DARK&WILD” and was newly recorded in Japan. How did the recording go?
SUGA : “Danger” Korean version was recorded in America. For “Danger-Japanese Ver.-”, we had KM-MARKIT (having helped us with our previous work) help write the Japanese lyrics. He gave us a lot of advice so we were able to achieve a fun recording.

――This has become the third time recording in Japanese. Are you growing accustomed to it?
All : (immediate reply) No (laughs).
JIMIN : To tell you the truth, up until now this song was the hardest in regards to pronounciation.
All : Yes, it’s true.

――Which part was especially difficult?
J-HOPE : Naturally, Korean and Japanese pronunciation differ but,
while making the best of my Korean accent, expressing in Japanese was really difficult.
JIN : Particularly, I struggled at the “mou kotaerarenai” part. Up until now, we’ve been singing in Korean, and so we’ve held a responsibility to uphold a certain image and we’re able to match the finer details of the language closely, but since it’s really different this time, if you don’t remember the small nuances/details, you’re in trouble.
JUNG KOOK : Rapping the “kiku kedo” part of “kiku kedo hibikanai shinzou ni” was especially hard. Continue reading “[Interview/Trans] BTS ☆ Style Vol. 16 at Oricon Style [141119]”

SUGA: I will sleep the entire day.

——The only person who’s going out is JIN.

防弾少年団☆STYLE VOL. 21: AN ALBUM PORTRAYING THE 7 MEMBERS’ REAL SELVES

An album made to suit the sensibilities of Japanese listeners

——Your 1st album「WAKE UP」was released on 24th December, Christmas Eve. Could you tell us more about it?

SUGA : Like its title「WAKE UP」suggests, (the album) carries a feeling of “awakening” and “realisation”. Along with the Japanese versions of our Korean songs, our new album also includes many original Japanese songs. Because of that, I believe it is an album that showcases a new side of BTS, and above all, one that suits attuned to the sensibilities of our Japanese listeners. We’ve also infused our members personal styles and honest feelings as messages into the album, so it’ll be great if fans can give the full tracklist a listen and get to know our true selves and current emotions a little better.

——It must be hard to produce and record the album while having your Korean activities. Were there any difficulties you encountered in particular?

SUGA : In general, (the whole process) took a long time, so that was tough. But we were blessed with a great song, so expressing our feelings was easy and we had fun recording it.

——If you had to choose one song you particularly like from the album?

SUGA : It will be「WAKE UP」for me. It’s refreshing as it’s different from our style up till now.
JUNG KOOK : I like「WAKE UP」too. The melody is great and I was able to sing well from start to end during its recording.
JIMIN : 「WAKE UP」for me too. It’s truly an original Japanese single! It was my first time (singing an original Japanese song), but I had a lot of fun singing it, and I’m looking forward to our future performances too.
: It’s「Like Pt. 2 ~at that place~」for me. I just really really like it! It’s a good song.
J-HOPE : 「THE STARS」for me. It’s full of hope and feels like a song that can make everyone who hears it happy; I like that.
JIN : I like「THE STARS」too. My reason is exactly the same as J-hope’s ― because it’s overflowing with hope and I get filled with happiness singing it.
RAP MONSTER : I like 「Danger -Japanese ver.-」. I think the Japanese lyrics fit the feel of the song more. Continue reading “[Interview/Trans] BTS ☆ Style Vol. 21 at Oricon Style [141224]”

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

——In 「Attack of Bangtan -Japanese Ver.-」, there’s a lyric that says “really modest”. In your opinion, when do you think you’re cool and modest?
V: I think I was the coolest when we received the Rookie Award last year.
All: Well said~ (claps)
V: Also, when we debuted in Japan!
All: Well said~ (claps)
V: And……
JIMIN: There’s more?
V: There’s one more moment
JIMIN: Then please tell us.
V: It was our comeback stage in Korea
JIMIN: Nice! V is really handsome (laughs)
V: Thank you! How about you Jimin?
JIMIN : In 「NO MORE DREAM -Japanese Ver.-」, I have a part where I step on the hyung’s backs, that’s the moment I think I’m the coolest.
RAP MONSTER : That’s because you feel good when you step on your hyungs’ backs isn’t it? (laughs)
JIMIN: No no, it’s simply because I think I’m cool.
J-HOPE : Don’t explain. Because it’s Jimin, it’s definitely because he steps on the hyung’s backs, no doubt. (laughs)
JIMIN: When I get teased by my hyungs, and Jungkook immediately joins in to ridicule me, I feel really wronged, and feel attacked (laughs) Continue reading “[Interview/Trans] BTS ☆ Style Vol. 15 at Oricon Style [140827]”

In the contents of this comeback, starting from「BOY IN LUV-Japanese Ver.-」, we’re digging deeper into the members’ more personal parts! The coolest member, the most passionate member is!? Let’s have them analyze it themselves! The most childish member, the most mature member is……!?

All: (laugh)

—— Even if it’s him who raised his hand, does everyone agree it’s V?

All: Yes.

RAP MONSTER : It’s him, no doubt.

——It’s an unanimous decision.

V: Great!

——But, not a lot of people raise their hand admitting they’re childish.

RAP MONSTER : I kind of envy this part of V.

——What do you particularly envy V about?

V: (covering RAP MONSTER) Appearance.

——Only looking like a child? That said, I wasn’t asking you (laughs)

V: (Not caring) I just look like a kid appearance wise.

RAP MONSTER : V is weird from head to toe (laughs). Even though he’s still like this now, when we’re dancing he’ll suddenly say something weird, or do something no one can understand or comprehend. Continue reading “[Interview/Trans] BTS ☆ Style Vol. 13 at Oricon Style [140813]”
